Dear brothers and sisters,
The words that opened this can of worms called 'life in a fallen world'.
"Did God really say?" (Genesis 3:1)
Then came the kicker,
"You will not surely die" (Genesis 3:4).
Who was right? God (see Genesis 2:17) or the Devil?
You know the truth. We're a dead and dying race, whether you want to admit it or not.
A lie is why we're in the mess we're in, so let's not pretend that lying will get us out of the messes we make for ourselves. From infancy we lie to cover our sins. So don't kid yourself, God knew when Adam and Eve were hiding the truth and he knows the lies you've told too.
God hates lies, because he is faithful and true. The author of truth, He says what he means and means what he says. God also hates lies because He is love and love refuses to allow a lie to lead someone else astray.
Lies are not benevolent. Don't believe me, look at the Father of lies (John 8:44). The serpent's lie promised freedom, but led only to slavery and death. So, no, a little white lie isn't better than the truth. "The truth will set you free" (John 8:32). Honesty, Integrity, unadulterated TRUTH. The whole truth and nothing but the truth.
The path to freedom
Hearing the truth, believe the truth. Believing the truth, confess the lies you've believed. Then tell the truth and live not by lies (Ephesians 4:25).
A Psalm of David. O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue (Psalm 15:1-3)
Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry (Psalm 34:11-15)
This is impossible, without Jesus, for He Himself is the truth (John 14:6). He is the Eternal Word, the logos, the one in and through whom all things exist. To deny Him is to deny the truth. The greatest lie of the Devil is that you can have the truth, without bowing before the one who is Truth. Trust in Christ, He is truth and life.
Grace & Peace be with you in the Truth,
Matt
P.S. I should add that there is a difference between lies and error. An error (though untrue) may be unintentional or due to ignorance. Lies are deliberate, intended to deceive. Errors are not neutral. They can be deadly (depending on the error), only the truth can deliver us from death. The difference is intent. God will judge the liar more severely than one who is in error, because the liar knows the truth and chooses the lie. In view of this, consider God's judgement on the ungodly in Romans 1:19-25. Truly, every one of us is in need of a Redeemer.
