Burning the Scroll (10/20/26)
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Consider these words,
"As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire." (Jeremiah 36:23)
The moment Jehoiakim burns the scroll of prophecies that God gave Jeremiah is a moment worth pondering. What do you do with the words you don't want to hear? We may not cut up our Bible line by line, but do we not often ignore the parts we don't want to hear? Praise God, His word is not so easily discarded. Praise God, He has preserved His word. Praise God, His word is able to cut through the towers we've made, to cut through our excuses and expose the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12), so that we might be rebuilt, remade in his image.
What do you do with the word?
Ignore it?
Burn it?
Carefully curate selections that suit your fancies and felt needs?
Or feed upon the whole word, the sweet and the bitter?
Choose wisely. Only one option is able to "make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ" (2 Timothy 3:15).
In Christ's Service,
Matt
