"Delight in the Thoughts of God" 7/9/24

Dear brothers & sisters,

David's delight was in the thoughts (and presence of God).

Psalm 139:17-18

"How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast are the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you."

One of the chief marks of the child of God is delighting in God's innumerable thoughts, counting God's thoughts as precious. When we love someone, we want to know them, their thoughts, their desires. We want to be like them, to be around them. So it should be with all who trust in the Lord. We should count it no greater joy than to love, think, will, and do what is pleasing to God. You say, "I love the Lord," but do you love all His thoughts? Do you seek them out, to know all his revealed will? Do you wake up wanting to know the mind of God and go to bed reflecting on his ways?

The depth of David's delight in God's thoughts, may be seen in what follows,

Psalm 139:19-22

"Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me! They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies."

David was not a vengeful man. He wept when his enemy Saul died. He would gladly have seen Saul reconciled to God. Yet, he had no tolerance for those who hated God. Why? He loved God. He saw the glory of God and could not bear to see God maligned. He saw sin as God sees it, so he stood opposed to those who had no regard for God or His ways. Do you think so much of God's thoughts that you hate what God hates?

David concludes, with the following prayer,

Psalm 139: 23-24

"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way!"

Here is a helpful checkpoint for us, do I love the LORD so much that I want my thoughts and desires to reflect the heart of God? David desired that his thoughts would be the thoughts of God, that his heart would after be the heart of God. He wanted to walk "in the everlasting way" to be near to God. And we, who have been given the Spirit of God through faith in the Greater Son of David, should also think this way --- counting the thoughts of God as precious, and his presence as our delight.

May the LORD bless you as you sift through the innumerable thoughts of God, as a man searches for hidden treasure.

Grace & Peace,

Matt
