Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Farming is hard work all year round, but come harvest-time most farmers hire extra help in order to harvest their fields before the season ends. The bigger the operation the more help is needed. If this is true of the harvesting of grain, how much more so is this true of the harvest of souls.
Matthew tells us,
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:35-38)
Notice our Lord's compassion, the people's need (a shepherd to care for them, laborers to bring in the harvest), and our Lord's command (pray to the Lord to send laborers).
Our Lord calls us to pray earnestly, not haphazardly or half-heartedly but fervently and persistently, for more people to evangelize and disciple the nations.
Will you join me in praying this prayer? This is God's heart, this is his will, there is great need across the world (that's a big field), so let us pray for more men and women of God willing to work for the advance of His Kingdom.
While you do so, remember that the Lord Jesus who told the disciples to pray for more laborers commissioned those same disciples to go and labor in His fields across the earth. This is not a prayer for those who sit on the sidelines, but a prayer from those in the trenches, serving Jesus where he's placed them.
Are you among them?
What are you laboring for?
Grace & Peace,
Matt
