"Greeting The Lord" 9/11/24

Dear brothers & sisters,

We read, in Genesis 18:1-8, of a time the LORD God visited Abraham.

1 And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3  and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4  Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, 5  while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” 6  And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” 7  And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. 8  Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

Abraham's welcome is an example to us of a godly welcome. When the Lord comes to visit, He is eager to welcome and honor Him. In the blazing heat Abraham ran to greet them, offering a place to rest and to eat. He did not spare any expense, to provide the best he had from the herd, and he waited upon them himself.

Brothers, is this how we greet the LORD every morning?

Do you greet your God...

With intentionality rather than the cold shoulder,

With joy rather than complaints,

With quickness rather than procrastination,

With extravagance rather than the bare minimum,

With gratitude rather than working to earn His favor,

With humble service rather than proud manners,

With surrender rather than demands?

Often we must confess that our attitude towards God has not been pleasing to Him. In those moments, be honest with God. Confess the ways you have sinned and ask for forgiveness and the grace to change.

Watch that you do not become like the church in Laodicea who, thinking themselves well, left the LORD outside, or the church in Ephesus who, busy serving hard & standing against false teaching, left the love they had for God behind.

Taste and see again today how blessed it is to have the LORD live among us, to dwell within us. To be visited by the Lord of the universe, to be called His friend through Jesus Christ is not a trifle. It is the greatest gift of all to be given friendship with God. This is something none of us deserve, yet it is offered as a gift to all who would trust in Christ the Lord. So may we all welcome Him, serving Him with as much joy, eagerness to honor, humility, & extravagance as Abraham did.

Grace & Peace,

Matt

P.S. Our heart towards God determines our heart towards others also. If we truly welcome our Lord with such joy and humility and delight, then we will also grow by His grace to love our brothers in the Lord in the same manner, even showing kindness to the stranger and towards our enemies. If we are cold-hearted in our affection for God, we will be cold-hearted towards other people also.
